UNITS OF NZP

 

Animals are arranged in Zoological order. In order to facilitate the visitors, the Zoo is divided into Zones and given suitable names.

Giant Tortoise / Children Park 

Galapagos Giant Tortoise is there right from the inception of the zoo in the year 6th October, 1963. Recently one more species addition to this zone i.e. Aldabra Tortoise which was received from National Botanical Gardens Foundation, Seychelles, East Africa in the year 2018.

 Primate Park

New and old world monkeys and Macaques housed in open and closed naturalistic moats, species like Squirrel Monkey, Grivet Monkey, Patas Monkey, Bonnet Macaque, Lion Tailed Macaque, Northern Plains Gray Langur, Northern Pig Tailed Macaque, Rhesus Macaque, Hamadryas Baboon and Malabar Giant Squirrel.  

Open Birds School

Free ranging birds can be seen in natural habitat bird’s species like Black Crowned Night Heron, Painted Stork, Cattle Egret, Little Egret, Median Egret, Large Egret, Indian Pond Heron, White Breasted Waterhen, Grey Headed Swamphen, Black Headed Ibis, Rose Ringed Parakeet and etc.

Carnivore corner & Small Cat Enclosures

Large Cats and Canidae species housed in this zone namely African Cheetah, Royal Bengal Tiger (White / Normal), Jaguar, Striped Hyaena, Indian Grey Wolf, Golden Jackal, Indian Fox, Indian Wild Dog.   Small Cats species housed in glass barrier enclosure namely Jungle Cat, Fishing Cat and Leopard Cat.

Open Maidan area  &  Elephant Camp

Species like Black Buck, Spotted Deer and Emu can be seen openly.  One male and three female Asiatic Elephants are housed in this zone. This zone is one of the main attractions to the visitors. The area consists of natural green vegetation, water pools and water shower.

Safari Complex

Nehru Zoological Park, Hyderabad is the first Zoo in the country to have started the concept of natural Safari Park and established the Lion Safari Park in 1974 extended over an area of 40 acres, which has been upgraded into Safari Complex adding Tiger Safari an area of 35 acres it was opened in 1988, Bear Safari and Bison Safari were opened an area of 17 acres in 1992. The nature of safari ride through CNG buses have been provided for taking visitors into the Safari complex which includes Lion Safari, Tiger Safari, Bear Safari, Bison Safari and Nilgai Safari. The Safari Park also attracts rich flora and fauna diversity. The habitat of the Safari Park covered with green canopy, rocky hillocks, shrub Forest and perennial water flows throughout the year and passages through Safari Park from Mir Alam tank.

Deer and Antelopes & Bears Bay

Brow Antlered Deer, Hog Deer, Barking Deer, Sambar Deer, Four horned Antelope, Nilgai, Black Buck and White Buck. Three different species of Bears displayed in naturalistic open moats namely Malayan Sun Bear, Himalayan Black Bear and Sloth Bear.

Duck Pond / Water Birds / Storks / Ratites

Variety of Ducks, Water Birds and Large Flightless Birds displayed in this zone namely Knob Billed Duck, Lesser Whistling Duck, Fulvous Whistling Duck, Northern Pintail, Eurasian Teal, Garganey, Bar Headed Goose, Spot Billed Duck, Black Necked Stork, Woolly Necked Stork, Painted Stork, Grey Heron, Purple Heron, Large Egret, Little Egret, Median Egret, Cattle Egret, Greater Flamingo, Lesser Flamingo, Sarus Crane, Rosy Pelican, Grey Pelican, Eurasian Spoonbill, Greater Cormorant, Little Cormorant, Ostrich, Emu and Rhea (Brown and White).

Lion Junction & Birds of Prey

Asiatic Lion, African Lion and Indian Leopard. Black Kite and Himalayan Griffon Vulture.

Mega Herbivores

Four species of Mega Herbivores are housed in the Zoo namely Hippopotamus, Rhinoceros, Giraffe and Indian Gaur.

 Aviary

On 10th November, 1977 was inaugurated by Dr. Salim Ali the renowned ornithologist visited the Zoo and inaugurated parrot enclosure. Recently modern glass barrier enclosures were opened for public on 23.12.2021 with different types of Parrots, Parakeets, Macaws, Cockatiels, Budgerigars, Conures, Pheasants, Fowls, Doves, Pigeons, Munias, Weavers and Sparrows from Asia, Australia, Africa and America.

Reptile Row

Crocodiles– Long Snouted Crocodile (Gharial), Crocodile (Mugger), Salt Water Crocodiles and Caiman.

Snakes– Indian Cobra, King Cobra, Indian Rock Python, Reticulated Python, Russel’s Viper, Indian Krait, Banded Racer, Common Trinket, Bronze Back Tree Snake, Nagarjuna Sagar Racer, Indian Rat Snake, Long Nosed Vine Snake, Yellow Collared Wolf Snake and etc.

Lizards– Bengal Monitor Lizard, Water Monitor Lizard and Green Iguana.

Amphibians – Indian Bull Frog and Asian Common Toad.

Turtles and Tortoise– Star Tortoise, Black Turtle, Red Eared Slider Turtle, Indian Flapshelled Turtle, Indian Tent Turtle, Indian Roofed Turtle and Brahminy River Turtle.   

Nocturnal Animal House

In 3rd October, 1987 the Nocturnal Animal House was inaugurated by N T Rama Rao, Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh. A unique animal display area enter into the cave through pathway and se enclosures which give night light during the day and you see nocturnal animals active and moving around. During the night the day light is provided and these animals sleep in that period because it is their sleeping time. Nocturnal Animals and Birds displayed in this house namely Small Indian Civet Cat, Asian Palm Civet, Jungle Cat, Honey Badger, Indian Porcupine, Rock Eagle, Mottled Wood Owl, Brown Fish Owl, Barn Owl, Spotted Owlet and Slow Loris.

Butterfly Park

One of the first open butterfly park attract a total of 41 butterfly species. In this park we planted variety of nectar and host plants to attracting butterflies. Seasonally large variety of butterflies can be seen in this park namely Plain Tiger, Striped Tiger, Great Egg Fly, Indian Crow, Black Raja, Common Nawab, Blue Pancy, Yellow Pancy, Tawny Caster and etc.

Jurassic Park & Aquarium

Display of life size fiber models of Dinosaurs (Viz., Brontosaurs, Stegosaurs, Tricertops and Tyrannosaurs). Aquarium consists of 13 varieties of fishes.

Natural History Museum
The Natural History Museum mainly focus on special emphasis on conservation education  through effective interpretive sign boards placed in Zoo Museum to   educate the insights into the displaying stuffed animal trophies with their natural history.
 
 Fossil Park
Fossil Park was opened for public on 06th October, 2017. Displayed preserved remains, impression or trace of any once-living thing from a past geological age. Examples include bones, shells, exoskeletons, stone imprints of animals or microbes, objects preserved in amber, hair and petrified wood.
